Job summary

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is hiring a Director for Democracy, Rights, and Governance (DRG) Initiative in a hybrid Los Altos setting. You will shape strategy, supervise a grantmaking team, and partner with grantees and leaders across sectors to advance democratic resilience and civic participation.

This role requires 8–10 years in democracy/governance work, strong leadership, and the ability to synthesize evidence into actionable strategies.

Qualifications

• 8–10+ years in democracy, rights, or governance issues.
• Strong leadership across teams and partnerships.
• Ability to use data and evidence for strategy.

Responsibilities

• Lead development, execution, and evolution of the DRG grantmaking strategy.
• Oversee grantmaking portfolio, budget, and operations with a focus on impact.
• Represent the Foundation to external leaders and think tanks to advance the DRG agenda.
• Manage and mentor a high-performing team and foster a culture of collaboration.

Education

Advanced degree in public policy or related field
