DREDGE CAPTAIN

The Griffin Groupe is searching for a highly qualified Captain for our client’s Suction Dredge Hopper vessel. Must have necessary USCG credentials, minimum 500 ton Master. Must have demonstrated maritime experience, i.e. ship handling skills and experience overseeing navigational watch/es. This professional will be a licensed mariner who has overall command and control of the navigation, maneuvering, cargo handling, stowage, communications and safe handling of the ship while ensuring crew and vessel compliance with international, federal, state, and local laws and policies. Must provide consistent, fair, and disciplined leadership to vessel crew and coordinate safe and efficient operation of the vessel while carrying out assigned tasking. The Captain must make operational decisions based on weather and other external conditions to ensure crew and vessel safety, keeping management informed on status of operations and material status’.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Overall safety and operation of vessel and crew, to include general Health & safety, training, policy, and execution.
  • Be familiar with, and enforce policies set forth by US Coast Guard and other Federal, State, and Company entities.
  • Vessel Security Officer. Be familiar with and perform proscribed duties of the VSO and set forth in the Vessel and Facility Security Plans. Enforce security policies as they pertain to vessel operations and work with management to improve safety and security measures.
  • Oversee all operations of the vessel; safely and efficiently perform navigational watches, cargo operations, and direct/oversee crew tasking in a safe, professional manner.
  • Ensure that all mandated logs, records keeping, cargo manifests, timecards, etc. are completed and maintained.
  • Manage training, drills, and exercises with assigned crew, ensuring completion on as needed and proscribed intervals.
  • Must be able to work with and around moving machinery.
  • Must be able to work at scheduled time, schedules can be flexible.
  • Identify and participate in any training that may be required to improve job performance or operating efficiency and safety
  • Communicate to management and crew problems, areas of concern, areas and ideas of improved operations and efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned by management
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Graduate – Bachelors preferred
  • Must have necessary USCG credentials, minimum 500 ton Master. Must have demonstrated maritime experience, i.e. ship handling skills and experience overseeing navigational watch/es.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by date of hire, Transportation Workers Identification Credentials (TWIC) as required by the Department of Homeland Security
  • Ability to learn all aspects of the vessel and operational systems.
  • Supervisory experience leading deck and engine crew and demonstrable team work and maturity with a strong work ethic
  • Record keeping aligning with USCG, ABS, US Army Corps of Engineers, and DEP regulations.
  • Communicate vessel and crew needs to management and ability to work and communicate with others as a team.
  • Willing and able to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
