Position Overview

Hopkins Academy is seeking a dynamic, passionate Drama Club Advisor to lead our grade 7–12 theater program for the school year. This after‑school position is responsible for facilitating regular drama club meetings and producing, directing, and executing one full‑length Spring Performance (play or musical).

The ideal candidate will foster an inclusive, creative environment that introduces students to all aspects of theater—acting, stagecraft, technical production, and teamwork—while tailoring expectations appropriately across middle and high school grade levels.

  • Key Responsibilities
    1. Artistic Direction & Production (Spring Performance)
    Select an age-appropriate script/musical approved by school administration, managing licensing and rights.
    Organize and conduct auditions, casting, and rehearsal schedules (held primarily after school).
    Direct students in character development, vocal projection, blocking, and stage movement.
    Oversee all technical production aspects, including set design/construction, lighting, sound, props, and costumes (coordinating student crew members or volunteers as needed).
    Coordinate logistics for show dates (ticketing, front‑of‑house, playbill/program design, and venue setup).
    2. Club Supervision & Instruction
    Plan and run regular after‑school Drama Club meetings throughout the school year, focusing on theater games, improvisation, acting techniques, and technical theater basics.
    Provide supervision during all rehearsals, performances, and club activities, maintaining safety and student discipline in accordance with District Policies and Student Handbooks.
    Verify student academic eligibility and attendance compliance according to district co‑curricular standards.
    3. Administration & Operational Duties
    Manage the drama club budget, including ticket sales revenue, material costs, and licensing fees.
    Maintain open communication with parents/guardians, school administration, custodial staff, and IT/facilities regarding schedules and space utilization.
    Ensure proper care, storage, and inventory of theatrical equipment, tools, and costumes.
    Qualifications & Requirements
    Education & Experience: Prior experience directing, teaching, or participating in theater productions (secondary school environment preferred).
    Knowledge: Familiarity with both performance techniques and basic technical theater (lighting, sound, set design).
    Licensure/Clearance:
    Must pass mandatory Massachusetts CORI and SAFIS (Fingerprinting) background checks.
    DESE Educator Licensure preferred, but not required for non‑staff applicants.
    Skills: Excellent communication, group management, budgeting, and organizational skills; ability to engage and mentor a diverse group of middle and high school students.
    Work Schedule & Compensation
    Hours: After school hours (typically 2–4 afternoons per week, increasing frequency leading up to Tech Week and the Spring show).
    Term: Early Fall through the completion of the Spring Performance.
    Compensation: Annual stipend per the local Teachers’ Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) / District Co‑Curricular Stipend Schedule.
