Job summary

David Evans and Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Drainage Engineer in California to provide technical leadership on transportation drainage projects. You will mentor engineers, perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, and develop innovative drainage solutions for highways and interchanges.

The role requires a CA PE license (or ability to obtain within six months), and you will collaborate with clients and internal teams to deliver high-quality designs across DEA's Roads & Highways practice.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of drainage engineering experience supporting transportation infrastructure projects.
  • PE license in California, or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity within six months of hire.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and collaborating with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience delivering projects for local agencies, counties, municipalities, or Caltrans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead drainage engineering teams on transportation projects including freeways, highways, interchanges, complete streets, urban and rural roadways, and multimodal facilities.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support planning, design, and construction of infrastructure, flood control improvements, and stormwater management facilities.
  • Design drainage systems including storm drain networks, culverts, detention and water quality facilities, bridge deck drainage, open channels, and roadside drainage features.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of multidisciplinary design teams to ensure technical accuracy and project compliance.
  • Prepare and review drainage designs using OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
  • Develop and perform quality control reviews of drainage reports, stormwater management plans, erosion and sediment control plans, quantities, and specifications.
  • Serve as the primary drainage technical lead and client liaison on transportation projects.
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and support DEA's California drainage practice.

The Transportation Business Unit is seeking a Drainage Engineer in Tustin or Ontario, CA.

As a Senior Drainage Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership on complex transportation projects that improve mobility and strengthen communities throughout California. Your day may include collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary project teams, performing and reviewing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, mentoring engineers, and developing innovative drainage solutions for highways, interchanges, and other transportation infrastructure. You'll play a key role in delivering high-quality designs while helping shape the continued growth of DEA's Roads & Highways practice.

What You'll Do
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead drainage engineering teams on transportation projects including freeways, highways, interchanges, complete streets, urban and rural roadways, and multimodal facilities.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support the planning, design, and construction of transportation infrastructure, flood control improvements, and stormwater management facilities.
  • Design drainage systems including storm drain networks, culverts, detention and water quality facilities, bridge deck drainage, open channels, river and bridge hydraulics, and roadside drainage features.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of multidisciplinary design teams to ensure technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Prepare and review drainage designs and engineering documents using OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, and/or Civil 3D.
  • Develop and perform quality control reviews of drainage reports, stormwater management plans, erosion and sediment control plans, quantities, and specifications.
  • Serve as the primary drainage technical lead and client liaison on transportation projects.
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and support the continued growth of DEA's California drainage practice.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of drainage engineering experience supporting transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of California, or the ability to obtain California licensure through reciprocity within six months of hire.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and collaborating effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience delivering projects for local agencies, counties, municipalities, or state transportation agencies (Caltrans).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience delivering transportation projects for Caltrans and/or other California transportation agencies.
  • Experience in a civil engineering consulting environment, supporting multiple clients and managing concurrent transportation projects.
  • Experience with bridge hydraulics, bridge scour, and revetment design.
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, InfoDrainage, Bentley PondPack, or similar industry-standard tools.
