Job summary

City of Akron is seeking a full-time drafter to support planning, engineering and architectural work. You will prepare detailed drawings from field notes, measurements and verbal instructions, update maps and compute earthwork and topography.

Responsibilities include checking profiles, preparing survey plats, and interpreting records. A high school diploma and two years drafting experience are required; an associate degree may substitute for experience.

  • Ability to use computer aids in drafting work.

Job description

Definition

This is full performance drafting work in support of planning, engineering and architectural work. An employee in this class performs the full range of drafting and computation work using both manual and computerized systems. Works under general supervision with independent responsibility for accuracy, completeness of work, and selection of methods to be used.

Characteristic Work

Prepares detailed engineering, architectural, or landscape architectural drawings from field notes, design computations, and verbal instructions. Prepares land use maps and topography plats using various sources such as tax maps, underground records, and aerial photographs. Updates and maintains various maps, drawings, underground sheets, and record sheets. Performs revisions on engineering and architectural layouts. Checks profile grades. Computes areas, angles, bearings, distances, grades, and curves. Prepares survey plats for purchase or sale of property. Computes earthwork. Investigates courthouse records to determine such things as land use, ownership, assessments, easements, and front footage. Makes field observations and measurements. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED. A minimum of two years of paid experience in drafting work or related training or paid experience. An associate degree in drafting technology or an equivalent degree may be substituted for the paid experience requirement.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques of drafting work. Knowledge of mathematics and construction detailing as they pertain to drafting work. Knowledge of construction methods and related materials, and of land use dimensioning.

Skill in performing calculations necessary to compute distances, angles, areas, bearings, grades, and curves. Skill in reading and interpreting various engineering and architectural drawings. Skill in preparing drawings from notes, sketches, and verbal instructions. Ability to use computer aides in drafting work. List of essential job functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades. VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
