Job description

The DPW Streets/Parks/Forestry Seasonal Laborer provides daily and seasonal maintenance for the City of Whitewater relating to its grounds, landscapes, flowers, ball fields, and street upkeep.

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary.

Responsibilities
  • Installs and provides proper maintenance of landscapes, flower beds/baskets and identifies diseased plants and foliage.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as pickup trucks, mowers, specialized turf mowing, and trimming equipment.
  • Performs maintenance on mowers, trimmers, and a variety of lawn care equipment.
  • Assists with street/park maintenance such as catch basin repair, placing asphalt, pavement crack filling, pouring concrete, flagging operations, brush collection, tree work, and garbage collection.
  • Assists with weekend baseball/softball tournaments including ball field preparation, concession stand, and general cleanup of the grounds.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be at least age 16.
  • One or more years of horticulture experience is a plus.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Prior experience using light equipment and motorized maintenance vehicles desired.
  • Significant attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices.
  • Meeting deadlines for daily operations.
  • Professional and appropriate responsiveness when interacting with the public.
  • Professional appearance and proper wear of work-wear. Must wear closed-toed/closed-back shoes (no sandal-style/type of shoe); in some instances, steel-toed safety shoes; all seasonal staff will wear t-shirts and long pants; Safety vest (provided) as needed.
  • Comfort working with heights and confined spaces.
  • Proper and safe operation of both light and heavy equipment and tools, including, but not limited to trimmers, weed whips, watering systems, and hand tools.

  • The employee must exert physical effort varying from sedentary to continuous activity during work shifts, involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, and climb.
