Job description

This vacancy is located in the Motor Vehicle Inspection section of TSS/Towing and Recovery Unit in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections/Office of State Police located in one of the following parishes: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson,Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana .

The position is for DPS Police Officer. It is located within the Office of Louisiana State Police. DPS Police is a statewide law enforcement agency with statewide police powers charged with ensuring the safety, order, and security of the people in the state through enforcement of laws, regulations, education, and provision of other essential public safety services.


This position is domiciled within Louisiana State Police—Region 1 area, which encompasses the Troop areas A, B and L. As a uniformed police officer within the Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit of the Transportation Safety Section, you will be required to conduct facility audits of motor vehicle inspection stations, to ensure the compliance of laws and regulations. This position will also become North American Standard Part A and B certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This FMCSA certification is required to conduct roadside commercial vehicle safety inspections to ensure compliance with federal laws and regulations. In addition, this position will assist the Towing and Recovery Unit (TRU) with roadside enforcement and with other tasks as needed.

Two years of experience as a DPS Police Officer; OR

Four years of law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here .Job Duties:

Performs advanced law enforcement patrol related duties of public highways, state facilities, and other locations.

Investigates/conducts law enforcement activities designed to protect life, enforce traffic and criminal law, and to provide public safety services.

Investigates criminal violations through surveillance.

May identify, contact, and develop potential confidential informants.

Identifies and apprehends suspected violators.

Investigates complex crime scenes for sensitive/complex vehicle crash scenes for the purpose of gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to be used in prosecuting suspects.

Secures areas impacted by natural/manmade disasters and civil disturbances.

Coordinates the removal of injured persons and vehicles involved in crashes or other incidents.

Completes documents related to enforcement activities such as reports of investigations, inspections, written warnings, citations, affidavits, warrants/ search warrants, property receipts/releases, and paperwork that may be required by other law enforcement agencies.

Inspects/investigates facilities to determine compliance with state laws and regulations, to maintain annual security assessments, and to improve public safety.

Appears as a witness in court.
