Overview

Responsibilities
  • Conduct proactive police patrols, issue citations, investigate crashes, respond to calls for service, and patrol assigned areas to deter and prevent criminal activity.
  • Investigate crashes, render first aid, interview drivers and witnesses, and prepare narrative reports.
  • Supervise removal of injured persons and vehicles to restore highway safety and traffic flow.
  • Regularly conduct investigations within the patrol area and enlist assistance as necessary.
  • May serve as a Field Training Officer for newly hired officers.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment.
  • Provide police protection to designated locations, including protection for elected officials, state employees, inmates, and visitors.

Position Details

Position Types – DPS Police Cadet, Officer, Sr. Officer, or Corporal, depending on experience. Career Progression may fill multiple levels.

Appointment Type – Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment. Work Schedule: 24 hours/7 days with shift work (days, nights, weekends, holidays).

Location – Positions available statewide; residency within 75 miles of assigned location is required. POST-certified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Compensation – Salary ranges from minimum $42,016/year (Cadet) to maximum $92,851/year (Corporal), based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • No prior experience or training required for minimum qualifications.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possession of a current driver’s license.
  • Willingness and ability to attain POST certification.
  • Disqualification if convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence or felony; relief from disabilities required for eligibility.
  • Ability to qualify with firearms; complete advanced driver and weapons training; pass background investigation and annual training requirements.
  • Non-POST certified applicants may be required to pass a physical assessment (1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups).
Job Duties and Sections
  • Capitol Detail, State Facilities Security, Headquarters Patrol, and State Police Barracks duties with related responsibilities for security and patrols.
  • Specific assignments may include embassy-like duties at Capitol Complex, state employee protection, and facility security at the Headquarters compound, among others.
  • Officers may serve as ambassadors when interacting with visitors and the public.
