Job summary

The State of Florida Department of Transportation is offering a DOT Intern – D4 position in the District Four area. This internship provides exposure to engineering, transportation planning, and business operations, with guidance from subject matter experts to illustrate how tasks fit into the overall production process.

The Work You Will Do:

DOT Intern – D4 / District Four / Transportation Operations

This is an exciting opportunity for any college or university student who plans to pursue a career in the fields of transportation, planning, public administration, engineering, finance, business administration, urban planning, logistics, contract administration or development, accounting, or related fields. This position will also shadow subject matter experts to help them familiarize themselves with other internal District work units and illustrate how they fit in with the overall production process.

Hourly Salary:

$17.25 / hour (20 hours/week)

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Gain knowledge, skills and experience in the Transportation Industry. Assist in various tasks across different departments. Engage in research and provide insights to support initiatives. Interact with executive leadership, team leaders, project managers, fellow interns, and external partners. Actively participate in team projects, contribute to agency goals, and assist in driving change within the organization.

Review, gain general knowledge, and perform technical tasks within one of the following focus tracks: Engineering exploring Professional Engineering roles; Transportation exploring Agency contribution to providing a safe, efficient transportation system; Business exploring business side of running an Agency; Self-Designed allowing self-determined focus areas.

Engineering Track (STEM Majors recommended, explores Professional Engineering roles)

Transportation Overview, Planning and Environmental Management, Roadway Design, Drainage, Structures, Geomatics, Traffic Operations, Geotechnical, Construction Materials, Construction Management, Maintenance, Structures Maintenance

Transportation Track (Any majors, explores transportation, in general, and how the agency contributes to providing a safe, efficient transportation system)

Transportation Overview, Program Management, Work Program, Modal, Planning, Project Management, Construction, Traffic Operations, Maintenance, Safety

Self-Designed Track (Any majors, explores specific areas for students desiring specific focus area(s) Transportation Overview, One to three focus areas based on students’ interest/university requirements.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Concepts, terminologies, and principles of subject matter
  • Microsoft office products (Word, Outlook, Excel)

Skilled in:

  • Communication technical and non-technical information both verbally and in writing
  • Planning, organizing, and managing multiple work assignments

Ability to:

  • Work collaboratively with both internal and external teams
  • Manage competing demands and establish priorities by utilizing organizational and time management skills
  • Possess flexibility, tact, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age (prior to appointment)
  • Actively enrolled in or accepted to an accredited university, college, or vocational/technical school for the duration of participation
