Job description

About the Democracy Alliance

The Democracy Alliance (DA), founded in 2005, is a donor community of individual philanthropists, foundations, and labor unions committed to democracy and a progressive future. The DA invests in building the progressive infrastructure in the United States by filling gaps, providing catalytic funding, and resourcing social change, all aimed at creating a just, equitable, feminist, multiracial democracy that works for all.

The DA recently completed a strategic planning process that established a new 10-year vision, grounded in current political opportunities and the need for long-term strategies and resources. Our vision emphasizes racial, gender, and economic justice, a thriving climate, and reaffirms the DA’s role as a convenor, resource aggregator, and community builder.

The DA serves as a powerful convener—a forum where leading progressive donors, foundations, and organized labor strategize together to leverage shared power and drive resources for democracy. We host two flagship conferences annually, bringing together 150–400 donors, movement leaders, and elected officials for learning, collaboration, and planning. Throughout the year, we also offer numerous learning events to build capacity and foster connections across our network.

About the Role: Donor Organizer - Politics & Elections

The DA seeks a seasoned, creative, and connected fundraising strategist to support our advocacy and electoral priorities, especially grassroots congressional accountability efforts in 2025 and efforts to win the House in 2026. This includes aggressive fundraising for Battleground NY, a coalition that successfully flipped crucial seats in NY and aimed to win the House, raising over $11M last cycle. This role is ideal for a skilled organizer and political fundraiser committed to organizing donors to protect democracy and build a just, feminist, multiracial democracy. The role also involves cultivating long-term progressive donor support across key states and nationwide, requiring collaboration, initiative, and a proactive approach.

Responsibilities

  1. Build and execute strategies to grow the DA’s donor network in key states (NY and CA) for battleground work, and develop resources for progressive political change.
  2. Drive an ambitious fundraising program to meet goals through donor engagement, call time, grant seeking, and events.
  3. Manage call lists, prepare materials, and lead follow-up with donors, working closely with leadership on outreach to high-priority prospects.
  4. Plan and execute high-impact donor briefings, cultivation events, and salons, managing logistics and post-event follow-up.
  5. Coordinate with coalition partners to understand program updates, funding gaps, and opportunities for donor action.
  6. Lead reporting, email communications, and draft proposals and updates.
  7. Manage relationships assigned by the President and EVP, guiding messaging, political navigation, and stewardship strategies.

Qualifications

  1. Extensive experience in fundraising for campaigns and organizations, especially with individual donors and political fundraising.
  2. Proven ability to work with donors, including preparing reports and presentations.
  3. Successful experience in campaign coalitions, with skills in negotiation, consensus-building, conflict resolution, and strategic disagreement.
  4. Electoral campaign experience, including independent expenditure campaigns, field programs, public opinion research, and media.
  5. Experience in managing and mentoring staff with a commitment to diversity, equity, and justice, and building strong relationships.
  6. Availability for irregular hours and national travel for donor events.
  7. Knowledge of NYS politics and organizational landscape.
  8. Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice.
  9. Urgency and resourcefulness in mobilizing support.
