Career Opportunities: Donor Care Specialist I, Northeast Donor Center (28547)

South Texas Blood & Tissue is an AABB-accredited blood bank. It operates nine donor centers in South Texas, distributing blood, plasma, platelets, and other components to regional hospitals and emergency first responders. It also provides starting materials to therapeutic developers, and clinical research services. Its apheresis center received FACT accreditation in 2022 for peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection. As an AATB-accredited tissue bank, it offers tissue recovery from living and deceased donors.

General Summary

Responsible for the medical screening, whole blood phlebotomy, and care of blood donors within our service area in accordance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) and BBG/STB&T policies. Support the blood needs of the community by converting donors to make the most impactful donation based upon current need and their eligibility/blood type.

Support, communicate and reinforce the mission and vision of the enterprise.

Provide world class customer service by capturing and being responsive to the voice of the customer (internal or external, including donors for select positions) through multiple feedback channels in order to resolve issues and drive satisfaction in accordance with the BBG customer engagement, feedback, and complaint processes.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Report to work as scheduled.

Display a professional image and positive demeanor that contributes to the success of the organization.

Deliver an outstanding donation experience by exceeding donor expectations.

Maintain regulatory compliance by successfully completing training and competency assignments on time.

Perform the quality control function (including documentation).

Determine donor eligibility through comprehensive donor verification, medical history interview and medical screening procedures (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, Hgb/Hct via finger stick).

Obtain donor consent prior to donation. Perform whole blood phlebotomy.

Assess, treat and report adverse donor reactions (including documentation).

Perform record review and data entry.

Pack collected blood products according to defined manufacturing plans.

Ensure all necessary records and blood products are legible, labeled accurately and complete.

Maintain a good working relationship with coworkers and supervisor including reporting issues relating to

donors, donor groups, or departmental operations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Provide assistance to other departments as needed.

Education

Requires a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.

Licenses and/or Certifications Phlebotomy Certification preferred

Experience

No prior specific work experience required.

Prefer phlebotomy experience in a blood or plasma center.

Knowledge

Must acquire a working knowledge of donor processing criteria.

Must acquire a working knowledge of medical terminology and geography.

Must become familiar with the community and area serviced.

Must acquire knowledge of and perform according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.

Skills

Must demonstrate proper equipment use and care.

Must complete documentation in a legible manner.

Must demonstrate adherence to safety procedures.

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Must demonstrate competency in performing donor registration, screening, labeling, whole blood phlebotomy, monitoring donor safety, product packing and quality control.

May be exposed to electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards and other conditions common to a laboratory environment.

May be exposed to blood borne pathogens and other conditions common to a clinical laboratory environment.

May be required to work any time of the day, evening or night during the week or weekend.
