Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a department culture centered on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering top-tier customer service, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation activities, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for the DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture that ensures injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training.
  2. Team Development: Coach and develop drivers and transportation associates through one-on-one coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior managers, create development plans, and address performance gaps.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster open communication and motivate staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervision: Oversee work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, drive engagement, and embody US Foods values.
  6. Recruitment and Evaluation: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, and manage disciplinary actions.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency of processes.
  9. Safety Meetings and Compliance: Conduct routine safety and driver meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  10. Scheduling: Use planning tools like Microsoft Excel to effectively schedule shifts.
  11. Other duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervision: Direct union and/or non-union drivers.

Internal Relationships: Collaborate with transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, and other departments.

External Relationships: Interact with customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road, exposure to noise and vibration, and time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year experience managing a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, primarily for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform physical activities related to driving and handling goods.

Compensation

Based on experience, skills, location, and other factors; expected base salary ranges from $55,000 to $90,000.
