The Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, provide top-tier service to customers, and ensure safe and profitable operations by leveraging their transportation experience to manage personnel and oversee efficient outbound shipments within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety-first mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, training, and culture in the Transportation department.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation staff through coaching, training, and problem resolution, ensuring compliance with safety and legal standards.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and develop improvement plans.
  4. Create an environment that encourages open communication and motivates team members to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, fostering engagement and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and enforce disciplinary actions as needed.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  10. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse, sales, and other departments. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road and in trucks, with exposure to noise and vibration; also in an office setting working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation, delivery, or warehouse distribution.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation

Dependent on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors. The expected base salary range is $55,000 - $90,000.
