The Manager, Transportation will ensure a transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and maintaining safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient operations through their team, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset that ensures injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to foster a safety-first culture in the Transportation department.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, problem resolution, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in their duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create development plans to address gaps.
  4. Create an environment encouraging upward communication and motivate associates to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise work and productivity within the department, drive engagement and retention, and embody US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach on safety and service, and administer disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety and driver meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to implement preventative measures.
  10. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision and Relationships

Supervises union and/or non-union drivers. Collaborates with transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, and internal customers, as well as external customers.

Work Environment

May spend significant time on the road, in trucks, and in noisy environments. Also spends time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation and delivery operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Up to 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education and Physical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred. Must be able to perform physical activities such as driving, pushing, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 and $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and applicable law.
