Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety-first mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in safety and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and develop plans to address gaps.
  4. Create an environment that encourages upward communication and motivates team members to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, fostering engagement and retention, and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach on safety and service, and handle disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and comply with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes, and ensure safety and efficiency.
  9. Conduct safety and driver meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  10. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct: Union and/or non-union drivers

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse and sales teams

External: Customers

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, exposed to noise and vibration; time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution (≥3 years), with at least 1 year overseeing a workforce. Driving experience is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Broad transportation operations knowledge, leadership, communication, understanding of DOT and regulatory requirements, ability to interpret data, and basic computer skills.

Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, education, skills, and location.
