Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation processes, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Lead with a safety-first mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Team Development: Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance discussions. Ensure all team members are trained in their job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Performance Management: Discuss performance with senior management, develop improvement plans, and address gaps.
  4. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment of open communication and motivate team members to meet department goals.
  5. Supervision and Engagement: Supervise work and productivity, drive engagement, and uphold US Foods values.
  6. Hiring and Performance Review: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, coach, and administer disciplinary actions as needed.
  7. Operational Oversight: Monitor production, troubleshoot delivery issues, ensure compliance with DOT regulations, and maintain accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  8. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency of processes.
  9. Safety Meetings and Compliance: Conduct safety and driver meetings, oversee maintenance of driver files, and investigate accidents to implement preventative measures.
  10. Scheduling: Effectively schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, other departments (e.g., Sales). External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road, in trucks, and in an office environment working on a computer. Exposure to noise and vibration levels higher than typical passenger vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervising a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation and delivery operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Must perform activities like driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks for specified durations.

Compensation

Base salary ranges from $55,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors.
