The Manager of Transportation will foster a safety-focused, service-oriented, and cost-efficient culture within the Transportation department. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel, ensure safe and timely outbound shipments, and maintain profitable operations.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for the DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of active-duty service. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to uphold a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create development plans to address gaps.
  4. Encourage upward communication and motivate associates to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, fostering engagement and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in interviewing and hiring transportation personnel, review performance, coach on safety and service standards, and handle disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes, and conduct routine safety and driver meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  10. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal departments. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road, exposure to noise and vibration, and time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Leadership, communication, and people development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT requirements and familiarity with OSHA and inventory control.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation

Range between $55,000 - $90,000, depending on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors.
