The Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost by engaging meaningfully with drivers, providing best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation activities, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and problem resolution, ensuring they are well-trained in their duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create plans to address gaps, fostering continuous improvement.
  4. Encourage upward communication and motivate associates to meet department goals and embody US Foods values.
  5. Supervise and monitor the work of drivers and clerical staff, driving engagement, retention, and a positive culture.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and administer disciplinary actions as needed.
  7. Maintain a zero-error approach to meet production goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety and driver meetings.
  9. Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  10. Schedule shifts effectively using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse staff, other departments.
External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road, in trucks, and in an office setting. Exposure to noise and vibration levels.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings or training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks for specified durations.

Compensation

Based on experience, skills, location, and other factors. The expected base salary range is $55,000 - $90,000.
