To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in Federal service as defined below; or four years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.
Specialized experience is defined as performing various clerical and administrative support duties; executing the entry of data into the electronic file and case tracking systems; sorting and retrieving data to produce documents and reports; updating databases and systems to record status changes in all items docketed; assisting with conducting periodic file reviews; locating and correcting data entry errors; communicating with visitors and telephone callers and responding to inquiries; receiving and routing incoming mail; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining filing systems.
Combining Education and Experience: Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as: utilizing a variety of office automation programs for the purpose of docketing and recordkeeping; experience updating and extracting legal data; possessing a working knowledge of legal terms and definitions; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; developing and maintaining automated records for final dispositions and case file closures; producing and reviewing statistical reports to identify errors and respond to inquiries; using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence, and related materials; assisting with conducting periodic case certification reviews.
To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as using advanced automation techniques to maintain and extract legal data from automated databases; performing diverse administrative support duties such as the entry of complex data into the electronic file and case tracking systems; possessing a working knowledge of legal terminology, litigation processes, and court proceedings to properly docket and identify errors in case files; reviewing reports to identify recurring errors; recognizing data elements that are missing and locating as necessary; performing necessary research to correct and update case records; assisting with conducting periodic case certification reviews; recommending revision of office procedures to improve docketing and case management functions; assisting with training new employees on the case management system.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
