JOB DESCRIPTION
A leading international law firm is seeking a Docket Clerk to join its Managing Attorney's Office within the Litigation Department in New York.
The Docket Clerk is responsible for maintaining the firm-wide docket and calendar for state, federal, and regulatory matters, and for processing both conventional and electronic filings in state and federal courts and before regulatory agencies. This position advises members of the Litigation Department on the calculation of deadlines, court rules, civil procedure, and filing protocol, and assists in reviewing, approving, serving, and transmitting filings to courts and government agencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain the firm's general litigation and/or Intellectual Property (patents, trademarks, copyrights, and annuities) calendar using a firm-approved calendaring program
- Regularly communicate deadlines to firm-wide litigation teams using the best available means
- Prepare additional calendar reports upon request
- Adhere to firm-wide best practices in calendaring
- Screen and review incoming court documents and office correspondence to calculate and calendar relevant deadlines using the firm's docketing system
- Ensure that lawyers are timely notified of filing deadlines and court appearances
- Maintain responsibility for quality control of all docket and calendar entries
Filings and Court Relations:
- Assist with and handle electronic case filings in addition to hard copy filings and document retrieval
- Assist with issues relating to service of process, including engaging process servers
- Act as liaison between case teams and vendors regarding service of process and coordination of delivery and retrieval of documents from courts
- Search and extract information from court-related databases, websites, and docketing and calendaring applications including PACER, Bloomberg Law, CourtAlert, Lexis, and Westlaw
Admissions and Department Support:
- Coordinate court and bar admissions for the office, communicating with attorneys and secretaries, directing the data collection and verification process, and establishing workflows for incoming and departing attorneys' admissions
- Maintain electronic court filing (ECF) passwords
- Assist with review of new cases and rule changes to ensure lawyers are apprised of recent developments under state rules, the FRCP, and the FRAP
- Maintain and update various department resources
- Perform various projects and tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree required
- Minimum of 3 years of related docketing and calendaring experience
- Proficiency with CompuLaw and/or CourtAlert
- Experience with online court systems including PACER and NYSCEF
- Proficiency with MS Office and standard PC applications
- Ability to apply court rules in multiple jurisdictions quickly, efficiently, and accurately
- Well-developed professional interpersonal skills and a high level of client service
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with appropriate discretion
- Positive, high-energy approach and strong written and oral communication skills
