Job summary

  • Observe, interact, and assist youth with everyday life skills; advise on appropriate alternative behaviors.
  • Train, assign, and review the work of lower-level DJS Resident Advisors.

Green Ridge Youth Center, 10700 Fifteen Mile Creek Road, Flintstone, MD 21530 (Allegany)

Main Purpose of Job

The Resident Advisor Lead provides lead-level work, providing supervision and guidance to youth residing in a facility operated by the Department of Juvenile Services. The position observes, interacts, and assists youth with everyday life skills, advises them of appropriate alternative behaviors, and trains, assigns, and reviews the work of lower-level DJS Resident Advisors. The Resident Advisor Lead must possess a full certification from MCTC and maintain it annually.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: One and one half years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youth in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at‑risk youth.
  • Note: Candidates may substitute successful completion of twelve hours of supervisory related training approved by DJS Human Resources for six months of required experience, or substitute education in criminal justice or related fields, or U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as specified.
Desired or Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience training, reviewing, and approving the work of employees in a secure residential juvenile facility or setting.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
  • Fully certified by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission prior to appointment, and required to maintain certification while employed.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license if assigned duties that require driving.
  • Valid Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) certification as a Medication Technician if required for employees at DJS Youth Centers.
Special Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
  • Minimum age 21 years.
  • Thorough background check including fingerprinting and drug testing.
  • Oral interview and physical and psychological examinations.
  • Substance abuse testing as required.
  • For employees at DJS Youth Centers, possession of a Maryland Board of Nursing Medication Technician certificate.
