Django/Python Web Developer
About the Role

National Journal is seeking a mid-level Django/Python Web Developer to build and support digital products for its Washington, DC audience. The digital team develops new services and products, improves existing offerings, and helps product teams use technology more effectively.

National Journal’s digital platform includes election data, demographic information, editable slides, government directories, event listings, and decades of journalism. The team uses Django with Python 3 and follows a frequent release cycle, supported by modern development tools, software development practices, QA processes, and LLM-based coding and workflow tools.

This role includes a full-stack mix of back-end and front-end development, with a primary focus on back-end work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, test, and deploy web-based tools using Django and Python.
  • Develop digital tools used by government affairs professionals and policy advocates.
  • Support the digital platform providing data, tools, and news related to the 2026 U.S. elections.
  • Maintain large datasets across PostgreSQL, MySQL, APIs, and other data sources.
  • Work with internal and third-party content and data sources.
  • Improve and maintain Ada, National Journal’s custom internal content management system.
  • Create and support tools that help product teams automate their work, using AI when appropriate.
  • Perform both back-end and front-end development, with an emphasis on back-end engineering.
  • Stay informed about software development tools, frameworks, programming languages, AI coding assistants, and development workflows.
  • Learn and work effectively within a sophisticated technical stack.
  • Participate in software development best practices, QA, documentation, peer code review, automated testing, and performance monitoring.
  • Collaborate with product and project managers to plan weekly sprints and meet agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects using Agile development methodologies.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of professional web development experience using Python, preferably Django.
  • Ability to write clean HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without relying on an AI coding assistant.
  • Professional experience contributing to significant software projects or significant components of larger projects.
  • Experience working effectively under deadlines.
  • Ability to navigate and contribute to complex codebases with an appropriate learning curve.
  • Experience with Git.
  • Understanding of software architecture and software development best practices.
  • Experience with documentation, peer code review, automated testing, performance monitoring, and tools that support consistent code quality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide accurate time and effort estimates.
  • Ability to collaborate with product and project managers.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, judgment, organization, focus, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Interest in government and elections, including campaign finance data, election visualizations, and political data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Django.
  • Front-end framework experience.
  • Experience with LLM-based coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
