Job description

About the Division
UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School Department of Pediatrics (https://med.uth.edu/pediatrics/) is seeking an outstanding and energetic physician-scientist leader to serve as chief of its growing division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (https://med.uth.edu/pediatrics/infectious-diseases/). The chief is expected to provide vision and to lead ongoing growth within a rapidly expanding medical school.

The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases has more than a 50-year history of excellence in academic pediatrics and great success in basic and clinical research. The Division, Department and Medical School are uniquely well positioned to support all aspects of research. Primary teaching hospital Children’s Memorial Hermann (CMHH) (https://memorialhermann.org/services/specialties/childrens) is a 240-bed facility averaging more than 120,000 patient visits each year. The hospital includes a 22-bed PICU, 20-bed CVICU, 90-bed Level III NICU, and a 38-bed Level II neonatal special care unit. Last year, the Division performed more than 700 inpatient consults and had more than 1300 outpatient clinical visits, which include ID patient follow-ups, referrals from the Memorial Hermann system, HIV pediatric patients (infected and exposed), and immunosuppressed transplant patients.

UTHealth Pedi ID has a resource-rich and diverse student, patient, and research environment — excellent ground for an aggressive physician-scientist to grow their areas of interest, with established clinical and research programs including:

  • General infectious diseases
  • HIV patient-centered care
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Hospital epidemiology and infection control/prevention
  • A clinical research group
  • A growing transplant and immunocompromised host service
  • A growing perinatal infection group including congenital syphilis and CMV infections
  • Long history of basic and translational applied research at domestic and international sites.

The Division currently hosts eight clinical faculty members; three clinical research faculty; three research faculty; and has an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Pediatric and combined Med-Peds Infectious Diseases. In addition to CMHH, Pedi ID clinicians provide inpatient and outpatient consultations in UT Physicians clinics; MD Anderson Cancer Center; Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (Harris County Hospital District); and serve as a referral service to the 14 hospitals of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System.

Position overview
The Chief in Pediatric Infectious Diseases will lead Division faculty in clinical and academic mission areas, including clinical service, education of trainees, research program development, and administrative activities.

The Chief will be primarily responsible for creating and implementing the vision and goals for the Division, in alignment with the broader strategic plans for the Department of Pediatrics and the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. There is strong institutional and departmental support to expand the division in its clinical, research and scholarly pursuits.

The Division Chief will be an associate or full professor with demonstrated experience and skill in leading academic programs. Qualified applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence, discovery, and service; a track record of achievement in their field of expertise; established recognition in academic pediatrics; and an interest in fulfilling the common goals of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

This position requires both outstanding clinical skills and proven leadership. While academic interests across pediatric infectious diseases are welcome, ideal candidates will have a strong track record of scholarly productivity, preferably a scientist with a history of independently funded research consistent with Division and Department goals. Additional requirements include board certification in their clinical discipline, along with full eligibility for Texas licensure, participation in UT Physicians health plan, and credentialing at affiliated medical institutions.

Candidates are asked to provide CV, three references, and a personal statement detailing their leadership experience, clinical goals they would propose for the Division, and description of their research interest and goals.
