  • Position Description: The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Division Chief for Multispecialty Anesthesia. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia. The division chief will be responsible for all aspects of the Department of Anesthesia missions as they pertain to specialties such as general surgery, otolaryngology, oral surgery, vascular surgery, trauma surgery, urology, neurosurgery, transplant surgery, and ophthalmology. The division chief will have a clear vision for advancing these anesthesia specialties and will collaborate with perioperative physicians and colleagues. The Department of Anesthesia is seeking faculty for appointment on the Clinical or Tenure Track at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank, depending on qualifications.

    Responsibilities include:

    1. Clinical Care: Leading multispecialty anesthesia clinical operations to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient resource utilization.
    2. Collaboration: Promoting effective collaborations among faculty and other scientists across the campus for multidisciplinary patient care and research.
    3. Education: Enhancing medical education in multispecialty anesthesia to meet high standards.
    4. Faculty Development: Supporting faculty growth and professional excellence.
    5. Research: Driving research initiatives and innovations in anesthesia specialties.
    6. Operations and Strategy: Developing quality improvement initiatives to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
    7. Administration: Representing the division in departmental, hospital, and university committees and contributing to strategic planning.

    Internal Resources include:

    • Development of simulation models for education.
    • Support for clinical research, including multi-center trials.
    • Collaboration with NIH-funded Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.

    Candidates must disclose any misconduct history or pending investigations, and will undergo background and credential checks.

    Education Requirements
    • MD, DO, or equivalent degree
    • Completion of an approved residency in anesthesiology
    • Fellowship in multispecialty areas
    Required Qualifications
    • Eligibility for medical licensure in Iowa
    • Board certification in Anesthesiology or equivalent
    Certifications
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    Desirable Qualifications
    • Knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, and students
    • Interest in teaching and/or research
