District Sign Technician I: Performs entry-level transportation-related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
District Sign Technician II: Performs skilled transportation-related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for a District Sign Tech I include:
- Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
- Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties.
- Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs. ]
- Performs and maintains inventory of signs. - Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck.
- Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
District Sign Tech II include those duties listed above, and:
- Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs) -
- Assists transportation maintenance crew with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
- Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.
Minimum Qualifications:
District Sign Tech I: No experience or education required.
District Sign Tech II: *1 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

- The Sign Crew Field Book
- The Guide to Proper Location and Installation of Signs and Other Devices
- Installing and repairing signs
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
- Maintaining a safe working environment
- Communicate effectively
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Salary Range:
District Sign Technician I (A16): $40,918 - $61,130
District Sign Technician (A17): $42,976 - $64,469
