Job summary

The Chief District Public Defender for the Tenth Judicial District oversees a staff of 137 including 90 attorneys and administers public defender services across Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright counties. The term of the appointed Chief Public Defender is four years and expires December 31, 2028.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Minnesota Bar required.
• Minimum five years of criminal-law practice; prior administrative experience.
• Ability to supervise attorneys and support staff.
• Experience with public defense programs and policy issues.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and administers district employees and offices.
• Hires, disciplines or terminates employees under supervision.
• Evaluates the work of attorneys and support personnel.
• Responds to inquiries from the public about the District Public Defender Office.
• Handles complaints from clients and resolves issues.
• Assigns cases to ensure even workload distribution.
• Resolves court scheduling issues and conflict assignments.
• Interviews, trains, mentors and evaluates staff.
• Maintains liaison with court administration, judges and other court personnel.
• Performs related duties as required by the Board of Public Defense or State Public Defender.
• Coordinates with other Chief District Public Defenders and State Public Defender on policy issues.
