Position Title: District Nurse Substitute

Department: Student Services

Reports To: Director of Nursing

FLSA Status: Temporary Employment

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Nurse LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Substitute Training
  • Nurse RN - Certified Registered Nurse (RN) and Substitute Training
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, substitute school nurses support student health and wellness to ensure a safe and productive learning environment. This role involves providing care for acute health needs, administering medications and treatments, and assisting with daily health‑related tasks during a staff nurse's absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide basic nursing care to students with acute or special health needs
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments as directed
  • Assist with toileting/diapering as needed
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services provided
  • Follow district health policies and nursing standards
  • Ensure confidentiality and safe health room operations
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents
  • Support student attendance by promoting wellness and health education
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

No direct budgetary responsibility

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

The temporary/substitute school nurse should be able to assess and respond promptly to student health needs, administer medications and basic treatments, and assist with toileting and hygiene when necessary. They must be familiar with school health policies, state nursing regulations, and documentation requirements while maintaining strict confidentiality. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential for working effectively with students, staff, and families. Additionally, the nurse should be capable of maintaining a clean, organized health room and be proficient with basic computer and health documentation systems.

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as boxes of materials. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted in a school health room and/or classroom environment with exposure to discomforting and potentially dangerous conditions such as diseases, medications, and blood/body fluid exposure and frequent contact with ill students. Works primarily inside, but may require work during outside activities. Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching. May require local travel.

The noise level in the work environment for this position varies. The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day.
