Job summary

Prince George’s County Government is seeking an Assistant State’s Attorney for the District Court Unit. You will prosecute misdemeanor offenses, handle preliminary felony matters, and represent the State in District Court proceedings.

The role emphasizes courtroom experience and ethical, high-volume case management. You will work closely with law enforcement, victims, and defense counsel, conducting research, preparing pleadings, and negotiating plea agreements while maintaining confidentiality

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the Maryland Bar and in good standing, or eligibility for admission pursuant to Maryland Rule 19.

Responsibilities

• Screening citizen-generated applications for criminal charges and determining prosecutorial merit.
• Reviewing police reports, investigative materials, and evidence to evaluate cases.
• Preparing misdemeanor and qualifying felony cases for trial.
• Reviewing charging recommendations for Circuit Court eligibility.
• Conducting legal research and preparing pleadings, motions, subpoenas, and other filings.
• Interviewing victims and witnesses to assess readiness and prepare them for court proceedings.
• Representing the State in various District Court proceedings and negotiating plea agreements.
• Litigating evidentiary issues and responding to defense motions.
• Conducting bench trials and, under mentorship, jury trials.
