Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is seeking a Distribution Power Engineer to support electric utility distribution projects, including new connections, system extensions, service upgrades, and infrastructure improvements across the United States.

You will develop engineering designs from customer requirements through construction-ready deliverables, collaborate with utility clients, developers, and internal teams, and ensure designs meet NESC and utility standards.

Role Overview

As a Distribution Power Engineer, you will support electric utility distribution projects with a focus on new business connections, system extensions, service upgrades, and infrastructure improvements. This role is responsible for developing engineering designs from initial customer requirements through construction-ready deliverables while collaborating with utility clients, developers, contractors, and internal project teams. The ideal candidate combines strong technical knowledge of electric distribution systems with a customer-focused approach and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

How You Will Make An Impact

• Develop overhead and underground electric distribution designs for residential, commercial, industrial, and utility infrastructure projects.


• Design new customer service connections, system extensions, relocations, upgrades, and distribution system improvements.


• Review customer load requirements and determine appropriate distribution facilities, equipment sizing, and service configurations.


• Conduct or support field investigations, site assessments, pole inspections, and route evaluations to gather project data and validate design requirements.


• Prepare construction-ready design packages, engineering drawings, material takeoffs, cost estimates, and supporting project documentation.


• Coordinate with utility personnel, developers, customers, contractors, permitting agencies, and other project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.


• Apply utility standards, engineering best practices, NESC requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements while supporting projects through construction and closeout.

What You Will Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.


• Experience in electric utility distribution engineering or distribution design, including support of new business, new service, or system improvement projects.


• Working knowledge of overhead and underground electric distribution systems.


• Experience designing residential, commercial, and industrial electric services and distribution facilities.


• Understanding of utility construction standards, engineering design principles, and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements.


• Ability to interpret utility specifications, construction standards, electrical drawings, maps, and site plans.


• Familiarity with distribution equipment including transformers, conductors, poles, underground facilities, protective devices, and service equipment.


• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.


• Ability to manage multiple projects, schedules, and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience supporting or working directly for an electric utility New Business, New Service, or Distribution Engineering organization.


• Experience with utility work management systems, GIS platforms, mapping applications, staking software, or distribution design tools.


• Experience preparing project estimates, work orders, and construction packages.


• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.

• Travel Requirements: Occasional field visits, site assessments, client meetings, and project coordination activities may be required.


• Physical Requirements: Ability to work in both office and field environments. Field assignments may require walking uneven terrain, inspecting utility facilities, and utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
