Job Description

Position Purpose:

This is a physically strenuous role that requires frequent standing and walking while outdoors, often in wet, muddy, and slippery conditions and at times in periods of extreme heat and cold. Materials and tools handled throughout the workday include but are not limited to hand shoveling dirt, gravel, large rock spoils, and broken concrete and asphalt.

Responsible for restocking vehicle inventory and preparing job site(s) daily. Installs, repairs, maintains and operates water distribution system assets, facilities, grounds and associated equipment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains water distribution system by repairing, tapping and installing mains and service lines, installing and maintaining valves, hydrants, blow-off, mains, meters and service lines, and performing flushing activities.
  • Provides excavation restoration in grass, sidewalks, roads, easements and rights of way.
  • Performs carpentry, painting and plumbing as necessary.
  • Performs flow tests, leak surveys, line locations, and field water quality tests.
  • Obtains various water samples and delivers them to the lab for analysis.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed.
  • Locates water distribution facilities (mains, service lines, etc.).
  • Concrete work; form, pour, and finish.
  • Welding and metal fabrication.
  • Uses digital tools, (computer, laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.) devices and software to communicate, and perform and record work.
  • Must be available for overtime and to respond to emergencies.
  • Performs all job responsibilities and duties in compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and security laws, rules, policies, programs and training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Proven related construction experience.
  • Water utility pipeline and heavy equipment experience preferred.
  • Field operations, field customer service, and/or water distribution system work experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of groundwater distribution system.
  • Ability to work with heavy equipment and various hand, gas, electric and hydraulic tools.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret maps, design construction plans and use appropriate tools and methods to determine grades and measurements.
  • General skill and knowledge of carpentry, concrete, painting and plumbing.
  • Ability to function in the digital world, using computer, laptop, tablet, smart phone devices and software to communicate and perform and record work.
  • Ability to use GPS and GIS for data access and information collection.
  • Proficiency with business office computing systems.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license (Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements or restrictions) or have ability to obtain within the probationary period.
  • Appropriate state license in distribution operation (Idaho Drinking Water Distribution Class II), or ability to obtain within 1 year after the minimum time frame as established by the Idaho State Board of Drinking Water and Wastewater Professionals.
  • Current CDL Class A license holder preferred.
  • Current drinking water distribution license holder preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and on an occasional basis up to 90 lbs.
  • Pushing is required frequently up to 109 lbs. and occasionally up to 185 lbs.
  • Hand shoveling, use of a digging bar, and jack hammering is performed frequently, and occasional use of a compactor.
  • Heavy equipment operation, (backhoe, track loader, dump truck, excavator) may require sitting up to 4-8 hours.
  • Climbing of ladders and up/down from equipment is performed occasionally.
  • Frequent crouching, kneeling, stooping/bending and twisting is performed with occasional lying down or crawling to work below grade and in compact spaces, while wrenching, levering, and manipulating hand tools.
  • Reaching is performed frequently below shoulder level and occasionally at shoulder level/above.
