Job summary

Alliant Energy in Janesville seeks a Distribution Operator to direct safe, reliable operation of electric and gas systems serving thousands of customers. You will coordinate planned work, support outage restoration, respond to emergencies and make critical operational decisions on 8/10/12-hour rotating shifts—including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

This role requires leadership across departments and strong safety practices.

Residency Requirements: Travel time from your primary residence to your assigned headquarters must be 30 minutes or less under normal driving conditions. Join our Distribution System Operations team in Janesville, where you'll help direct the safe, reliable operation of electric and gas systems serving thousands of customers. As a Distribution Operator, you'll coordinate planned work, support outage restoration efforts, respond to emergencies, and make critical operational decisions that help keep our communities powered and connected. Job Summary Approves and is ultimately accountable for all planned, emergency and hot-line switching. Coordinates work on shift with dispatch resources including leveling workload for pre-scheduled and emergency work. Dispatches for electric and gas services. This position will work 8, 10 and 12 hour rotating shifts. Shifts include days, nights, weekends and holidays.

What you will do Provides leadership for multiple departments, locations and contract services for electric and gas maintenance, operations and construction services, technology systems, customer care and customer service. In coordination with other system operating personnel, may assume responsibility and authority for the following: analyzes the integrity of the distribution system based on current and planned conditions and notifies appropriate leadership. Responds to emergencies in accordance with company policies and procedures to minimize customer impact, (SAIFI, SAIDI, etc.), taking all necessary actions to maintain system integrity by: sectionalizing, monitoring system conditions, or other appropriate action. Initiates or directs emergency call tree action and routes information to appropriate departments and personnel (i.e. Field Operations Leadership, Corporate Communications, Key Account Manager, etc.). Uses discretion and has authority to take any action necessary to assure the distribution system is operated in a stable and reliable manner including load shedding and system restoration activities. Advises DSO Leadership of improper operating practices or performance in violation of company safety practices in their area of responsibility. Uses tools such as Gas SCADA to monitor the operation of high pressure gas lines, gate stations and low pressure distribution systems. Supports and engages in implementation and enhancements of all computer applications. Ensures all regulatory and compliance reporting is completed within required timeframe. Must be able to work in a highly stressful environment and to be able to deal with multiple tasks and situations simultaneously. Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety: requires observing and enforcing safety rules and operating practices, encouraging safe work behaviors and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe work behaviors which may lead to accidents. All other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements Associate Degree Preferred Preferred Experience 2 years of experience in utility operations/ construction Other Requirements Must possess a valid driver’s license. This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and PHMSA regulations (Part 199).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of electric and gas systems and how they operate. Ability to troubleshoot electric and gas problems by analyzing available information. Demonstrated ability as a leader in attitude, safety, productivity, good business judgment and emergency response. Knowledge of company strategy regarding outage restoration and emergency response. Demonstrated ability to perform and efficiently multi-task under adverse conditions and communicate effectively with employees and public agencies. Thorough knowledge of company policies and procedures pertaining to switching, emergency response and dispatching. A working knowledge of distribution system operations applications. Strong communication skills including grammar, punctuation and telephone etiquette. Demonstrated ability to perform accurate work in a time frame which meets department objectives. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Ability to perform physical requirements of the job. Ability to successfully pass pre-employment screening assessments.
