Job summary

FirstEnergy is seeking a Distribution Designer for the Springfield, Ohio Service Center. The role focuses on design, construction, relocation, and new business work to support the Distribution function, using design standards, regulatory requirements, and software tools.

The on-site position requires an Associate degree in a technical discipline (or equivalent experience), strong communication, and ability to manage shifting priorities.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical discipline required or high school diploma with minimum two years related work experience.
  • Experience with utility design practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to read procedures, manuals, drawings, and schematics.
  • Willingness to participate in emergency and storm-related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee overhead and underground distribution systems for residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
  • Coordinate with customers and internal teams through project lifecycle.
  • Support billing functions for line extensions and relocations.
  • Maintain compliant records and contribute to technical reports and metrics.

About The Opportunity

This is an open position with the Ohio Edison Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Distribution Designer is responsible for the design, construction, relocation, and new business work to serve the Distribution function of the Company. The Designer leverages customer service, software use, and learned expertise in design standards and regulatory requirements. This individual acts as a regular point of contact for internal and external customers through the lifecycle of various projects and tasks. The position is on site and located at the Springfield Service Center in Springfield, Ohio.

Responsibilities Include
  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Utilize FirstEnergy construction standards and engineering practices to complete single‑ and three‑phase overhead and underground designs to serve residential, commercial, and industrial requests.
  • Support job progress through customer contacts, field work, job packages, and job closeout functions including material review and paperwork verification.
  • Facilitate billing functions for line extension and applicable relocation work, including billing recommendations in non‑routine scenarios.
  • Facilitate completion of outage management system (OMS) follow‑up requests, inspection and maintenance repairs, streetlight installation and replacement, claims, transmission priority repairs, and aerial patrol findings.
  • Acquire permits related to railroad, Department of Transportation, and municipality road right‑of‑way.
  • Collaborate with customers to secure and document easements for line extensions and highway relocation work.
  • Update and maintain compliant records to support technical reports, metrics, and information systems.
  • Travel to various off‑site locations as required, including FirstEnergy offices, training facilities, and customer sites.
  • Provide ongoing assistance during emergencies and storm‑related activities.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a technical discipline is required.
  • Or high school diploma or equivalent and minimum two years of related work experience is required. Related experience includes utility design and knowledge of design practices, procedures, and methods used in construction.
  • Pass the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) employment test.
  • Strong communication ability to guide decision‑making or consensus, negotiate acceptable outcomes, and diffuse challenging situations.
  • Willingness to seek guidance and advice to fill gaps in understanding.
  • Self‑motivated and able to manage shifting priorities.
  • Able to interpret complex written and visual information, such as procedures, manuals, drawings, and schematics.
  • Able to gain working familiarity with standards, codes, regulations, electrical systems, construction methods, equipment, and safety requirements, including practical applications.
  • Able to gain proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Office, SAP, customer request work scheduling (CREWS), outage management system (OMS), and graphic work design (DDS).
  • Willingness to participate regularly in emergency and storm‑related activities, including the ability to work additional hours and/or modified schedules when necessary.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required.

The estimated pay range for this role is $64,600 - $99,000.
