Job summary

FirstEnergy is seeking two Distribution Designers for on-site positions at Solon, Mayfield, or Painesville service centers in Ohio. You will design overhead and underground layouts, support project progress, and coordinate with customers from start to finish.

Qualifications include an associate degree or equivalent experience, plus proficiency with OMS, CREWS, SAP, and related tools. Must be ready for emergency duties and travel to various facilities.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical discipline is required or high school with two years of related utility design experience.
  • PASS the Edison Electric Institute TECH employment test (TECH).
  • Strong communication to guide decisions, negotiate outcomes, and diffuse conflicts.
  • Willingness to seek guidance to fill knowledge gaps and adaptability to shifting priorities.
  • Able to interpret complex written and visual information, including procedures, drawings, and schematics.
  • Proficiency in software including Microsoft Office, SAP, CREWS, OMS, and graphic design (DDS).
  • Willing to participate in emergencies and storm-related activities, including extended hours when needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for site visits.

About The Opportunity

This is for two (2) open positions with the Cleveland Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Distribution Designer is responsible for the designed construction, relocation, and new business work for the Distribution function of the Company. The Designer leverages customer service, software use, and learned expertise in design standards and regulatory requirements. The individual acts as a regular point of contact for internal and external customers through the lifetime of various projects and tasks.

These positions are onsite and can be located at the Solon Service Center (Solon, OH), the Mayfield Service Center (Mayfield, OH), or the Concord Service Center (Painesville, OH).

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Utilize FirstEnergy construction standards and engineering practices to complete single‑ and three‑phase overhead and underground designs for residential, commercial, and industrial requests.
  • Support job progress through customer contacts, field work, job packages, and job closeout functions, including material review and paperwork verification.
  • Facilitate billing functions for line extension and applicable relocation work, including billing recommendations in non‑routine scenarios.
  • Facilitate completion of outage management system (OMS) follow‑up requests, inspections, maintenance repairs, streetlight installation and replacement, claims, transmission priority repairs, and aerial patrol findings.
  • Acquire permits related to railroad, Department of Transportation, and municipality road right‑of‑way.
  • Collaborate with customers to secure and document easements for line extensions and highway relocation work.
  • Update and maintain compliant records to support technical reports, metrics, and information systems.
  • Travel to various off‑site locations as required, including FirstEnergy offices, training facilities, and customer sites.
  • Provide ongoing assistance during emergencies and storm‑related activities.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a technical discipline is required.
  • OR high school or equivalent and minimum two years of related work experience is required; related experience includes utility design and knowledge of design practices, procedures, and methods used in construction.
  • Pass the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) employment test.
  • Strong communication ability to guide decision‑making or consensus, negotiate acceptable outcomes, and diffuse challenging situations.
  • Willing to seek guidance and advice to fill gaps in understanding.
  • Self‑motivated and able to manage shifting priorities.
  • Able to interpret complex written and visual information, such as procedures, manuals, drawings, and schematics.
  • Able to gain working familiarity with standards, codes, regulations, electrical systems, construction methods, equipment, and safety requirements, including practical applications.
  • Able to gain proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Office, SAP, customer request work scheduling (CREWS), outage management system (OMS), and graphic work design (DDS).
  • Willing to participate regularly in emergency and storm‑related activities, including the ability to work additional hours and/or modified schedules when necessary.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required.

The estimated pay range for this role is $64,600 – $99,000, depending on location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
