Job description

Description

Leidos is seeking a Distribution Engineering Supervisor who is passionate about electric‑utility design engineering. The role is responsible for ensuring that every project, regardless of complexity, meets the highest quality standards and for working directly with clients to uphold Leidos’ reputation for excellence. The successful candidate will gain experience in NESC, structural pole modeling, electrical power calculations, GIS design, field data collection, and client design standards.

The position follows a hybrid work model: three days per week in the office collaborating with internal teams and two days per week working remotely.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of 5–8 engineers to develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems (4 kV through 138 kV), often associated with programmatic work such as overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports.
  • On‑board, manage performance, and assign day‑to‑day tasks for direct reports.
  • Act as technical lead for engineers and designers to develop construction work packages, including engineering calculations and constructability concerns; train junior engineers, designers, and entry‑level technicians.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to maintain project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Review client‑provided work and assess scope requirements; communicate progress, technical issues, and schedule with clients.
  • Ensure compliance with Leidos and client safety requirements, as well as design and quality expectations.
  • Develop permitting documents for different AHJs (Authority Having Jurisdiction).
  • Coordinate with permit agencies, right‑of‑way specialists, system owners, field and forestry personnel, and third‑party owners for joint‑owned poles.
  • Travel to sites and customer meetings as needed.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sag and tension specifications, voltage‑drop, and flicker analysis.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of work by other engineers for client submittal.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including post‑construction reviews to ensure all applicable engineering and construction standards have been met.
  • Conduct root‑cause analysis of outages and mitigation using engineering principles and design.
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of prior relevant experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET‑accredited institution; additional relevant experience or certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with NESC standards, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, and Bluebeam and/or Adobe.
  • Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, Spida‑Calc, O‑Calc, DDS, and SAP.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail when reviewing other engineers’ designs for errors.
  • Some previous experience monitoring scopes and tracking others’ work progress.
  • Willingness to perform both office and field work; overnight travel may be necessary (15–25% travel).
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to use a personal vehicle for customer‑related travel (reimbursed at IRS‑approved rates).
  • Experience with ESRI and GIS preferred, but not required.
  • Prior team‑leadership experience is a plus.
