Job summary

United Utility Services is seeking a Designer to design overhead electric distribution projects and process field survey data, circuit drawings, and feeder system upgrades. You will use GIS software and the utility's work management system to produce construction drawings and estimates under QA review.

The role emphasizes client interactions, adherence to safety standards, and staying current with guideline changes, with a focus on field design and restoration support as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor/associate degree in engineering or technology.
• 3–5 years power distribution design/engineering experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Valid driver's license; pass background and credit check.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to interact with clients on project design responsibilities.
• Willingness to adapt to change.

Responsibilities

• Update GIS software to reflect current field conditions.
• Design and process construction work requests for overhead electric distribution.
• Prepare CAD drawings for QA review.
• Prepare distribution circuit designs with basic understanding of distribution concepts.
• Prepare pole boring, cost estimates, and reports for construction/maintenance.
• Track design activities in the project management system.
• Attend training sessions to maintain proficiency.
• Promote a safe work environment according to Gold Standard.
• Stay current on client guideline changes.
• Follow safety procedures in field and pre-job activities.
• Attend meetings with client engineers to define project scope and document notes.
• Assist with gathering field survey data and verify maps.
• Assist with storm restoration activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

The salary for this position is $37-$48 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.

About The Role

The Designer designs overhead electric distribution projects that will serve to strengthen the client's electrical grid. The incumbent will process field survey data, circuit drawings, utility standards, project estimates, and feeder system upgrades utilizing GIS software and a work management system provided by the utility.

Key Responsibilities

• Updates GIS software to reflect current field conditions
• With guidance, designs and processes construction work requests related to overhead associated with electric distribution systems applying the prescribed guidelines, utility standards, and procedures.
• Prepares computer assisted designs and generates construction drawings for review by Quality Assurance (QA), Design Supervisor, and other Designers
• Prepares distribution circuit designs with basic understanding of circuit drawings and distribution engineering concepts
• With assistance, prepares pole boring, cost estimates, and any other required documents and reports for construction and maintenance projects
• Tracks and updates design activities within United Utility's project management system
• Attends regular training sessions to maintain proficiency in design work
• Promotes a safe work environment using United Utility's Gold Standard
• Stays current on client guideline changes
• Follows the United Utility safety procedures when out of office and in the field including the pre-job brief and vehicle inspections
• Attends outside meetings with client engineers to define project scope and submit meeting notes for all client and designated internal staff at pre-construction, pre-engineering, and pre-design stages
• Assist with the gathering of information from field survey data and verify accuracy of maps and record drawings
• Assist with storm restoration activities such as patrolling, extendo stick, and production lead during a storm
• Other duties as assigned

Key Qualifications

• Bachelor/associate degree in engineering, technology, and 3-5 years power distribution design/engineering experience required
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
• Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
• Must pass background and credit check
• Good oral and written communication skills are required
• Ability to interact with clients in connection with project design responsibilities
• Strong ability to tolerate change and willingness to be flexible
• Displays a questioning attitude
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Design Manager
• Experience with Xcel Energy Distribution

Key Nice-To-Haves

• Ability to utilize mapping software preferred
