Job summary

Eversource Energy is searching for a Field Automation Technician to provide technical service for system control and data acquisition on the Distribution Electric Grid. The ideal candidate will assist in installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of SCADA systems.

This entry-level role requires a knowledge of electrical components, an Associate's Degree in a relevant field, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Critical Infrastructure Protection certification is also required.

Field Automation Technician / Specialist

Provide technical service to install, commission, troubleshoot and maintain remote terminal units for system control and data acquisition on the Distribution Electric Grid. This entry‑level position requires working independently or as part of a team (non‑union employees, contractors or vendors) on assignments related to installation, programming, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of hardware and database records associated with a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). The SCADA system includes equipment such as Remote Terminal Units, data concentrators, Human Machine Interfaces, communication systems, servers, applications, digital meters, analog transducers, peripheral hardware and sensors.

Key responsibilities: schedule on‑call and storm assignments; maintain Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) certification; work with circuit breakers, reclosers, line sensors, fault locators, smart switches, feeder metering, alarm dialers and other Intelligent Electronic Devices; and create and update configuration and drawing files used by the SCADA system.

Essential Functions
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and services electrical and electronic equipment associated with the SCADA system.
  • Reads and interprets engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, logic and interconnection diagrams; may also include manufacturer documentation.
  • Provides input to reports, drawings, sketches and logs of work performed; makes corrections to engineering drawings to reflect field changes.
  • Obtains clearance, if required, from the appropriate dispatching agency to perform work on critical operating equipment or electronic systems.
  • Operates a variety of electrical and electronic instruments to test and calibrate (e.g., voltmeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, transmission test sets, frequency counters, spectrum analyzers, communication service monitors, multi‑meters).
  • Identifies and analyzes communication problems/failures on systems including leased telephone facilities or internal communication circuits; reports and explains details of problems to the carrier or internal personnel; returns equipment to service after repair.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic components, circuitry, and systems.
  • Ability to use computer‑based technology with various operating systems.
  • Manual dexterity and proficiency in making repairs, adjustments, and modifications to equipment; familiarity with testing and measurement techniques.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation use and application; familiarity with electrical and electronic testing and measurement techniques.
  • Effective communication of technical information, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of CONVEX switching and tagging procedures preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Eversource safety rules and practices.
Education & Experience
  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or equivalent.
  • 0 to 3+ years of related experience required.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection certification must be maintained annually.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
