Job summary

The Elevance Health Companies, Inc. is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of enterprise-grade AI systems.

This hybrid role requires deep expertise in distributed architectures, LLMs, and AI governance, to modernize legacy systems and improve engineering velocity. You will guide architectural direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate with stakeholders to drive scalable, secure AI solutions across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor9s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in software engineering with deep expertise in distributed systems and large-scale architecture.
  • Experience delivering production-grade AI/ML systems at scale, building agentic systems or complex LLM-based applications.
  • Strong programming expertise in Python, Java, or similar languages.
  • Deep experience with APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and DevOps practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of large-scale, production-grade AI systems and platforms that enable enterprise-wide innovation and modernization.
  • Architect and deliver scalable, resilient AI solutions leveraging agentic systems, large language models (LLMs), distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
  • Define enterprise-wide technical direction, including architecture patterns, integration standards, and reusable platform capabilities.
  • Lead AI-driven modernization of legacy systems through automated code transformation, service decomposition, and continuous optimization.
  • Design and implement AI-enabled software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices to improve engineering velocity and quality.
  • Establish technical standards, governance frameworks, and best practices for AI systems, including monitoring, evaluation, and responsible AI.
  • Partner with engineering teams and stakeholders to enable adoption of AI-assisted development and drive continuous improvement in system performance and productivity.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship while influencing enterprise technology decisions through deep expertise and hands-on engineering.

Position Title: Distinguished Engineer

Locations and Work Arrangement

This role requires associates to be in‑office 1‑2 days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity while providing flexibility for productivity and work‑life balance. Alternate locations may be considered if the candidate resides within a commuting distance of an office. Candidates outside a reasonable commuting distance will not be considered unless an accommodation is granted as required by law.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in software engineering with deep expertise in distributed systems and large‑scale architecture.
  • Experience delivering production‑grade AI/ML systems at scale, building agentic systems or complex LLM‑based applications.
  • Strong programming expertise in Python, Java, or similar languages.
  • Deep experience with APIs, microservices, event‑driven architectures, cloud platforms, CI/CD, and DevOps practices.
Preferred Skills, Experiences and Competencies
  • Strong expertise in healthcare technology ecosystems, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and AI at scale.
  • Hands‑on experience deploying AI/ML solutions, including Generative AI (GenAI) and LLMs.
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, IAM, encryption, network security, and cloud‑security best practices.
  • Proven success driving DevSecOps adoption through automation, CI/CD optimization, IaC, and secure software delivery practices.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, able to influence cross‑functional teams and engage executive leadership.
Salary and Benefits

Salary Range (Maryland): $243,012 – $364,518. Benefits include a comprehensive package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and 401(k) contribution.
