Job description

Distinguished and Faculty Development Chairs in Materials Science

The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth invites applications for chaired positions in Materials Science and Engineering. Exceptional early-career candidates at the rank of assistant or associate professor will be considered for the Vincent Faculty Development Chair, while outstanding mid-career and senior candidates will be considered for a distinguished professorship. We seek candidates with a doctorate in materials science, engineering or a closely-related field who show strong potential to lead an externally-funded research program targeting transformational advances in Materials Science and Engineering. Examples of research areas include but are not limited to computational modeling, advanced manufacturing, energy materials, quantum materials, and applications of ML/AI to materials development or processing.

The successful candidates will be gifted teachers with motivation and expertise that complements the Thayer School’s interdisciplinary approach to engineering education. They will contribute to a distinctive research and education program addressing innovative technological responses to societal challenges. The chairs provide resources to help launch a high-impact research program and foster leadership across the materials community at Dartmouth, leveraging the recently-upgraded Electron Microscopy Center (https://www.dartmouth.edu/emlab/), WeFab cleanroom facilities (https://sites.dartmouth.edu/microengineering/equipment/), machine shop (https://sites.dartmouth.edu/mshop/about/equipment/), and Discovery Cluster high-performance computing facilities (https://rc.dartmouth.edu/hpc/#discovery-cluster).

Dartmouth is a member of the Ivy League and consistently ranks among the world’s leading academic institutions. Furthermore, Dartmouth's PhD Innovation (PhD-I) Program is the nation's first doctoral-level program aimed at providing PhD students the skills and support necessary to engage in enterprising research and translate their work into the commercial sphere. For more information see http://engineering.dartmouth.edu.

Review of applications will begin October 1st, 2026 and will continue until the positions are filled. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, complete CV, statement of research and teaching interests and philosophy, and contact information for three references via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/187552.
