Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools is seeking a Distance Learning paraprofessional to support instructors at the sending site and act as a teacher surrogate at the receiving site. You will assist in lesson facilitation, monitor student behavior, and complete administrative paperwork including attendance and reports.

Responsibilities include maintaining order, communicating with DL teachers via email and other channels, purchasing instructional supplies, and processing student contracts.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; experience with middle/high school students preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, parents and students.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and basic data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide paraprofessional support for Distance Learning instructors.
  • Assist in maintaining student behavior and classroom order.
  • Process attendance, discipline referrals, and administrative paperwork.
  • Facilitate distribution and collection of instructional materials and contracts.
  • Report attendance issues and maintain logs of materials sent/received.
  • Assist in coordinating IEP and 504 plans with the DL teacher.

General Responsibilities

Provide the Distance Learning (DL) instructor paraprofessional support by facilitating delivery of materials to and from the students and monitoring student behavior while at the sending site; at the receiving site, teacher assistant acts as a teacher surrogate by facilitating lesson plans, monitoring student behavior, and completing administrative paperwork (i.e., attendance, excessive absence forms, discipline referrals, textbook inventory, monthly reports).

  • Assist classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.
  • Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
  • Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Help maintain order in the classroom; monitor students to ensure time on task.
  • Ability to communicate with DL teacher(s) using e-mail, fax, phone and inter- office mail.
  • Facilitate purchase of instructional supplies.
  • Distribute (with due dates), collect, facilitate and process student contracts.
  • Report technical problems.
  • Administer student attendance policy and facilitate, record and report attendance issues (i.e., excessive absenteeism, tardiness).
  • Facilitate, record, report attendance issues- excessive absenteeism, tardies.

  • Perform related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; ability to use classroom and Distance Learning instructional equipment; ability to operate standard office, word and data processing equipment; basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite word processing, data base, and spreadsheet documents, email, and web pages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and associates.

Education And Experience

Required: High School Diploma or GED. Experience working with high school or middle school students.

Physical Requirements

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Salary Range: From/To

Entry hourly rate: $19.28-$28.13

Compensation will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. The entry-level rate will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the rate will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
