Overview

Under the supervision of the Communications Director, the Dispatch Supervisor will oversee all dispatching personnel within the communications center. The position may include receiving calls for transport to and from facilities, directing calls to appropriate management, and various professional and administrative tasks. The Dispatch Supervisor may broadcast assignments to transport crews, operate radio, telephone, or computer equipment to send and receive communications, and relay information or orders to management. The Dispatch Supervisor may function in the capacity of an EMT as set forth by company policies and protocols, and may also function as Communications Manager, Dispatcher, or Dispatch Call Taker to assure all company tasks are maintained and completed.

Reports To: Communications Director as appropriate for all operational activities.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates complete knowledge, understanding and compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that Computer Aided Dispatch console, phone system, radio system and all equipment are ready for use at the beginning of each shift.
  • Ensures security of buildings, Dispatch Center and all other company property.
  • Performs daily inspections of the work area and Dispatch Center for cleanliness; performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, clutter-free, sanitary work environment.
  • Maintains appropriate communications with company units, managers, support staff, receiving healthcare facilities and other agencies via radio, data link, pager or cell phone as required.
  • Maintains knowledge of local geography including hospital locations, public venues, local streets and highway systems.
  • Deploys, tracks and moves units throughout the day per the local System Status Posting Plan.
  • Responds to all calls for service promptly and accurately, answering incoming phone calls for service per Emergency Medical Dispatch and company procedure.
  • Uses Emergency Medical Dispatch procedures to determine the exact nature of each call and provide pre-arrival instructions as required.
  • Dispatches the most appropriate unit by radio, pager or mobile data terminal for each request for service.
  • Obtains complete intake information from callers and inputs all required data correctly into the Computer Aided Dispatch system.
  • Communicates and coordinates with Field Supervisors, Operations Managers and other staff to ensure the proper number of fully equipped and staffed vehicles are available daily.
  • Maintains patient care quality and safety, and upholds the professional reputation of the Dispatcher and the company.
  • Ensures safety of field crews, patients, bystanders, and other public safety personnel at scenes.
  • Provides appropriate pre-arrival instructions per emergency medical dispatch and company procedure.
  • Maintains security and privacy of all company and patient information in accordance with HIPAA and applicable regulations.
  • Accepts responsibility for recertification as an EMD and other required licenses and certifications as required by policy and law.
  • Reports to assigned shifts on time, properly groomed in uniform and ready to work, remaining on duty until properly relieved.
  • Acts as a professional leader and example for others; prioritizes patient care excellence and safety.
  • Acts as a Field Training Officer, assisting in the evaluation, orientation and training of new dispatch staff.
  • Directs and leads dispatch staff in unit deployment, handling calls and dispatching units.
  • Directs and leads dispatch staff in administrative tasks related to vehicle issues, injuries, supply requests, and housekeeping activities.
  • Assists senior managers by acting as a first point of contact for dispatch staff questions regarding pay, benefits, or personnel issues.
  • Assists Field Supervisors, Quality Improvement and Billing support staff in evaluation, training and follow-up with field crews on protocol compliance and documentation.
  • Performs other duties as directed by management.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Requirements: All Dispatch Call Taker and Dispatcher requirements. Ability to function as a leader evaluating, coaching, training and directing dispatch staff.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to reach, push and pull.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use phones and radios to communicate with callers, crews and other staff.
  • Ability to use mouse or keyboard to input data into computer systems for long periods.
  • Ability to view graphic and text data on multiple computer screens for long periods.
  • Ability to perform all job duties during any and all hours of the day and night.
