Job summary

International School of Indiana is seeking a reliable Dishwasher to support our kitchen team in Indianapolis. You will maintain clean dishes, utensils, and work areas to ensure a sanitary, smoothly running lunch program for students and staff.

Hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:15 pm. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of lifting up to 50 lbs as needed in a fast-paced school kitchen environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Up to 3 months of related experience or training.
  • 3 years of housekeeping experience preferred.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Scrape, rinse, and wash dishes and utensils ensuring cleanliness.
  • Wash pots, pans, and trays and allow to dry before reuse.
  • Follow safety procedures, including glove use when handling knives.
  • Monitor temperatures and chemical levels and report deviations.
  • Keep dish area clean and organized; sweep and mop floors.
  • Assist with loading/unloading supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

As our Dishwasher, you'll be essential to keeping our kitchen clean, safe, and running efficiently. You'll take ownership of dishware, pots, pans, trays, utensils, and work areas — making sure everything is spotless, sanitized, and ready for the next meal service. Your attention to detail and commitment to safety standards will directly support our team's ability to serve students, staff, and guests with confidence.

What you'll do:

  • Scrape and rinse food from dirty dishes, and wash by hand or load into dishwashing machine racks/conveyors as assigned — ensuring complete cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Wash pots, pans, and trays according to assigned procedures, allowing items to dry fully before storing or reusing.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including the use of cut-resistant gloves when handling and cleaning knives.
  • Monitor and record temperatures and chemical levels per established standards, and notify your supervisor promptly if anything is out of range.
  • Keep the dish area clean and organized, including mats and walkways, in compliance with safety standards.
  • Sweep and mop kitchen floors at appropriate intervals to maintain safety and sanitation.
  • Wash worktables, walls, refrigerators, meat blocks, and other food prep surfaces as assigned.
  • Sort and remove trash and garbage to designated containers; steam clean or hose out garbage cans as assigned.
  • Safely transfer supplies and equipment between storage and work areas, following proper lifting techniques.
  • Assist with loading or unloading supplies and products as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Up to 3 months of related experience or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years of housekeeping experience preferred.

  • Detail-oriented and thorough in all tasks.
  • Comfortable interacting professionally, politely, and courteously with staff, students, parents, and visitors.
  • Discreet and respectful of the privacy of students, faculty, staff, and guests.
  • Able to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to complete work efficiently and effectively.
  • Able to read and follow simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Able to perform basic math, such as adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, and multiplying/dividing by 10s and 100s.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, talk, listen, and see clearly throughout a shift.
  • Frequent walking and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 10 lbs, frequently lift up to 25 lbs, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced kitchen environment, including around water, heat, and cleaning chemicals.
