Job summary

Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) is seeking a Policy Specialist for the IRCL (Institutional Rights and Civil Liberties) Team, based in Austin, TX. The role focuses on policy advocacy to improve the lives of people with disabilities, supports case handlers with training, and conducts policy research and communications for stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required, public policy, political science, government, education, disability studies or related field.
• Strong writing, verbal and negotiating communication skills for concise messaging to diverse audiences.
• Experience presenting publicly and developing presentations for boards, councils, conferences, and legislative testimony.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships and influence across stakeholders.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor and train others.
• Experience working with governmental entities and knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the in-house expert on assigned policy issues and lead policy advocacy efforts.
• Provide training and technical assistance to case handlers and collaborate with team members.
• Monitor legislative and administrative actions; respond to information requests and provide testimony.
• Prepare communications, grant reports, and stakeholder materials.
• Represent the organization at advisory boards, task forces, and committees.
• Coordinate training and policy activities with staff and external partners.
• Travel as needed to deliver services and trainings.
