Job summary

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) seeks a Director of Clinical Medicine to lead the ZHP clinical division at the Bronx Zoo, directing veterinary care and staff across city zoos. The role reports to the VPZHP and requires a NYS veterinary license, extensive zoo medicine experience, and leadership across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Hold a veterinary degree (DVM, VMD, DMV, or equivalent) with 10+ years in zoo/wildlife medicine.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain NYS Veterinary License, USDA accreditation, DEA license, and Driver's License.
• Knowledge of regulations from USDA, DEA, OSHA, AZA, AAZV, NYS and NYC.
• Able to manage a complex multi‑veterinarian, multi‑technician health care program.
• Work outdoors in varied weather conditions to provide veterinary care.
• Board certification/eligibility in ACZM/ECZM/ABVP desirable.
• Proficient in English with excellent written, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Flexible schedule including non-traditional hours, holidays, on-call, and weekends.
• Experience coordinating activities with multiple departments.

Responsibilities

• Maintain licensure, competency, and knowledge of zoological/wildlife medicine.
• Ensure staff maintain current knowledge of advances in veterinary medicine.
• Provide high-quality veterinary care for WCS animal collections.
• Lead clinical cases and manage an appropriate case load.
• Establish preventive health care and quarantine programs.
• Assess and implement new health and quarantine procedures.
• Communicate with curators to coordinate services and care.
• Mentor clinical staff to foster professionalism and quality care.
• Develop and follow veterinary protocols meeting regulatory standards.
