Job description

Director, Workstation Platform Engineering

Director of Workstation Platform Engineering provides end‑to‑end technical, programmatic, and organizational leadership for HP’s premium desktop workstation portfolio. The role owns organization design, platform development, and cross‑functional alignment from early architecture and silicon engagement through product introduction, sustaining activities, customer delivery, and long‑term roadmap readiness. This position operates at the intersection of business and portfolio strategy, engineering leadership, supplier/ODM management, regulatory compliance, and financial stewardship; ensuring HP delivers differentiated, high‑performance workstation platforms on time, at scale, with industry‑leading quality, and meeting customer experience goals.

Responsibilities
  • Platform & Program Leadership Provide executive‑level leadership across multiple concurrent workstation programs, including new platforms, platform refreshes, sustaining engineering, and customer‑driven adaptations. Own platform execution across architecture alignment, design readiness, validation, manufacturing ramp, and post‑launch quality. Serve as the final arbitration point for technical risk, priority tradeoffs, scope decisions, and schedule commitments. Partner across program functional groups to ensure team alignment to deliver excellence in execution, quality, and design decisions.
  • Organizational & People Leadership Lead multiple senior managers and extended leadership teams across hardware and firmware development, validation, performance, OS enablement, and platform integration. Own workforce strategy, including hiring plans, succession planning, promotions, and long‑term capability development. Establish organizational operating models that balance in‑house capabilities with ODMs and partners. Provide coaching and executive sponsorship to senior technical leaders and managers.
  • Technical Oversight & Engineering Excellence Maintain executive oversight of workstation platform architectures and development functions, including board and system design, system performance, power delivery, thermal solutions, and quality & reliability. Set development strategies for the owned functional areas to ensure successful project design points, platform robustness, and customer readiness. Sponsor engineering automation, data pipelines, benchmarking systems, and tools that improve scale, predictability, and engineering efficiency. Ensure engineering decisions remain grounded in customer workloads, competitive positioning, and long‑term architectural intent.
  • Financial, NRE & Portfolio Ownership Own and steward multi‑million‑dollar R&D budgets, including headcount, NRE, outsourced services, tooling, and supplier contracts. Define, approve, and coordinate investment strategies for programs, balancing innovation, affordability, and reuse. Lead portfolio‑level resourcing, funding prioritization, and cost tradeoff studies across competing initiatives. Partner with finance and senior leadership to ensure execution plans align with business objectives and constraints.
  • Supplier, ODM & Ecosystem Leadership Act as HP’s senior R&D interface to ODMs and key worldwide suppliers. Define sourcing and engagement models spanning full ODM, hybrid, and HP‑managed execution. Lead executive‑level escalations related to supplier quality, cost, schedule, and manufacturability. Ensure supplier strategies align with HP’s quality, compliance, and long‑term goals.
  • Regulatory, Compliance & Customer Readiness Provide executive oversight for regulatory compliance, government requirements, and security certifications impacting workstation platforms. Lead cross‑functional response to customer escalations, field issues, and high‑visibility commitments (including public sector and regulated markets). Ensure platforms meet regional, security, and lifecycle requirements without compromising schedule or quality targets.
Required Experience & Capabilities
  • Senior‑level engineering leader (Director) with experience in hardware, systems, or platform engineering.
  • Proven success leading large, multi‑disciplinary engineering organizations delivering through complex product cycles.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at a strategic level within a technical context.
  • Strong executive communication skills with experience influencing VP/Sr. VP/GM‑level stakeholders.
Preferred Background
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline (advanced degree preferred).
  • 15+ years in the computer hardware delivery industry.
  • Experience at large‑scale technology companies (devices, platforms, SaaS, consumer tech) strongly preferred.
