Job summary

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking a Director of Wet Lab Engineering to lead a multidisciplinary team spanning hardware, optics, microfluidics, automation, and software, developing instruments and automated workflows that tie the lab to data, computation, and AI.

The ideal leader will have 10+ years of relevant industry experience and a PhD or Masters in a physical engineering field, with a track record of building scalable laboratory systems and mentoring engineers who push scientific discovery

Qualifications

• 10+ years of relevant industry experience with a PhD or Masters in a physical engineering discipline.
• Inventive builder and systems thinker with experience integrating instrumentation, automation, robotics, and AI/ML.
• Proven hands-on people manager of 10–15 multidisciplinary engineers, providing strong technical direction.
• Familiar with biotechnology and drug discovery workflows, and able to collaborate with scientists across disciplines.
• Technical breadth across hardware, automation, software, data, and AI/ML.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a multidisciplinary team of engineers spanning hardware, optical, microfluidic, automation, and software.
• Set the technical vision for Wet Lab Engineering and identify opportunities where new capabilities can change how science is done.
• Drive development of bespoke instruments, automation, and integrated experimental systems from ideas to deployed capabilities.
• Advance autonomous and agentic laboratory operation, tightly linking physical experiments with software, data, and AI/ML.
• Collaborate with wet-lab scientists, biologists, computational scientists, and ML teams to translate needs into working systems.
• Foster a culture of creativity, technical excellence, rapid experimentation, and rigorous engineering.
