Job description

Heartflow is a medical technology company advancing the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, the #1 cause of death worldwide, using cutting-edge technology. The flagship product—an AI-driven, non-invasive cardiac test supported by the ACC/AHA Chest Pain Guidelines called the Heartflow FFR CT Analysis—provides a color-coded, 3D model of a patient’s coronary arteries indicating the impact blockages have on blood flow to the heart. Heartflow is the first AI-driven non-invasive integrated heart care solution across the CCTA pathway that helps clinicians identify stenoses in the coronary arteries (RoadMapAnalysis), assess coronary blood flow (FFR CT Analysis), and characterize and quantify coronary atherosclerosis (Plaque Analysis). Our pipeline of products is growing and so is our team; join us in helping to revolutionize precision heartcare.

Heartflow is a VC-backed company that has received international recognition for exceptional strides in healthcare innovation, is supported by medical societies around the world, cleared for use in the US, UK, Europe, Japan and Canada, and has been used for more than 400,000 patients worldwide.

As a Director of UX Design, you will lead the user experience vision and strategy for Heartflow's innovative medical technology products. You'll be responsible for building, mentoring, and leading a team of talented UX designers, ensuring a cohesive and exceptional user experience across our growing product portfolio. Your role will involve championing user-centered design principles, collaborating closely with product management and engineering, and setting the standard for design excellence in a regulated environment. A significant focus will be on translating complex medical algorithms and data into intuitive and effective user interfaces for clinicians, requiring a deep understanding of design for medical devices and clinical workflows.

Job Responsibilities:

  • UX Strategy & Vision: Define and champion the overall UX vision and strategy for Heartflow's products, ensuring alignment with business goals, user needs, and technological capabilities.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of UX designers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Design Excellence: Establish and enforce design standards, best practices, and a consistent design language across all products, ensuring a high bar for usability, aesthetics, and user satisfaction.
  • User Research & Insights: Drive comprehensive user research initiatives, including usability testing, interviews, and ethnographic studies, to deeply understand clinician workflows, pain points, and needs. Translate these insights into actionable design solutions.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product management, engineering, human factors engineering, clinical, and regulatory teams to integrate user experience seamlessly throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Product Definition & Planning: Collaborate with product managers to define user needs, inform product roadmaps, and translate complex technical requirements into elegant and intuitive user experiences.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all design activities and outputs comply with relevant regulatory standards for medical devices (e.g., FDA, IEC 62366, ISO 13485), working closely with QA/RA.
  • Design Operations: Optimize design processes, tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency and collaboration within the UX team and across cross-functional partners.
  • Thought Leadership: Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in UX design, medical device design, and healthcare technology.

Skills Needed:

  • Experience: Proven track record as a UX leader, with significant experience in designing and delivering complex products, preferably within the medical device or healthcare domain.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and mentor a team of UX designers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment.
  • Design Expertise: Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in interaction design, visual design, information architecture, and user research methodologies for complex applications.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to translate business objectives and technical constraints into compelling user experience strategies and actionable design plans.
  • Communication: Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and advocate for user needs to diverse stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to design decisions.
  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Regulatory Acumen: Not required, but familiarity with regulatory frameworks is preferred, especially with medical devices (e.g., FDA, IEC 62366, ISO 13485) and experience navigating design processes within a regulated environment.

Educational Requirements & Work Experience:

  • A BS/MS degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 12 years of professional experience in UX design, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or management role, and a preference in Software as a Medical Device.
