Advanced Energy United seeks a Texas Director to lead its legislative and political engagement in Texas. You will build relationships with lawmakers, develop and execute the Texas strategy, and coordinate with regulatory and policy teams to expand markets for advanced energy.

You will educate decision makers about advanced energy technologies and mobilize member engagement across electric and transportation policy. Remote work is possible with residency around Austin, TX.

Position Description

Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a strategic, experienced, self-starting candidate with a background in legislative work, issue advocacy, coalition building, and/or organizing, to lead United’s legislative and political engagement in Texas. The Texas Director will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with legislative and administrative decision makers in Texas, developing and executing on United’s Texas strategy, and working collaboratively with United regulatory and policy teams to achieve successful outcomes that expand markets for the advanced energy industry. This work will educate decision makers and candidates about advanced energy technologies and facilitate United member company engagement in policy advocacy. Specific areas of focus may include energy affordability, clean energy and transmission infrastructure, grid resilience and flexibility, transportation and building electrification, and regional wholesale markets.

The Texas Director will report to the Central Region Managing Director. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel occasionally to meet with United staff, members, coalition allies and stakeholders, and public officials.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of strategies, in collaboration with Advanced Energy United policy team members, to accelerate Texas’s clean energy transition in the electric and transportation sectors, and meet short- and long-term policy objectives as part of United’s policy portfolio. These could be legislative, administrative, or regulatory, or a mix of all three.

• Work with Advanced Energy United member companies to develop policy positions and reach consensus on key issues.

• Manage lobbyist and consultant relationships on the ground and their engagement in legislative matters and/or communications strategies.

• Organize member opportunities for direct decision-maker engagement including lobby days, legislator and candidate education, earned media, and participation in legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes, as needed.

• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative and administrative staff. Engage in coordination and advocacy efforts with coalition allies in support of clean energy goals.

• Create reports, presentations, fact sheets, and other written and visual materials needed for education and advocacy efforts, draft comments, testimony, and deliver verbal presentations as necessary.

• Work with our communications team to identify opportunities for Advanced Energy United to seek earned media coverage. This may include drafting press statements, doing media interviews, writing blog posts, participating in webinars, and creating opportunities to showcase advanced energy.

• Travel on an as needed basis (up to 30%) for advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of Advanced Energy United.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, economics, engineering or arts and sciences preferred, or comparable experience; master’s degree in a relevant area is a plus

• Interest in energy and transportation issues and an understanding of the importance of policy advocacy to advance an organizational agenda.

• Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to operate independently and handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to independently draft clear, comprehensive, and persuasive written documents appropriate for intended audiences.

• Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.

• Performance-oriented individual with a strong work ethic, demonstrated initiative, and commitment to achieving goals.

• Ability to engage members, customers, and funders, and sellAdvanced Energy Unitedand its value proposition to those audiences.

• Must be willing to travel.
