Job description

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

We are looking for a Director, Technical Revenue Accounting to join our Accounting Team. In this role, you will own the company’s most complex ASC 606 technical positions, lead the revenue accounting memo portfolio, and serve as the senior accounting decision-maker for new product revenue recognition treatments, non-standard deal structures, and partnership / marketplace go-to-market initiatives. You will partner directly with Deal Desk, Product, Legal, and Partnership leadership and set the technical revenue policy direction for the company! If you are looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact on the financial infrastructure of an innovative company, come join us in our mission to build cutting-edge, safe AI.

Key responsibilities
  • Own the company’s ASC 606 technical accounting memo portfolio — authoring and reviewing position papers on the most complex and judgment-intensive revenue recognition scenarios, including the SSP study
  • Lead the technical revenue assessment for all new product offerings (NPI) and programs, serving as the accounting decision-maker on performance obligation identification, SSP evaluation, and contract modification frameworks, and providing authoritative guidance to Product, Pricing, and GTM cross-functional teams
  • Serve as the senior Revenue Accounting partner to Deal Desk, Sales, and Legal — structuring non-standard deal terms, and providing real-time revenue recognition guidance on the company’s largest and most strategic commercial arrangements
  • Provide technical accounting guidance on partnership and marketplace arrangements for cloud third-party channels, including principal‑vs‑agent determinations, and revenue‑share / co‑sell economics
  • Own key accounting processes such as SSP analysis and related allocations, contractual credit amortization, reseller/partner channel incentives and rebates, footnote disclosures etc.
  • Own the revenue contract review framework, including ASC 606 checklists, position papers, and escalation paths, ensuring revenue recognition compliance scales with deal volume
  • Lead technical research initiatives on emerging revenue recognition issues and present recommendations to the Controller
  • Translate complex technical accounting requirements into actionable business guidance for non‑accounting stakeholders
  • Review revenue‑related month end close journal entries and flux analysis
  • Drive process improvement and revenue system implementation projects, including scoping, design sign‑off, and UAT ownership
  • Have a track record of authoring technical accounting memos on complex, judgment‑intensive revenue arrangements
  • Have strong knowledge of ASC 606 with experience in performance obligation analysis, standalone selling prices, contract modification accounting, considerations payable to a customer, principal versus agent analysis, material rights, and variable consideration treatment
  • Ability to articulate complex accounting positions clearly, and proactively conduct technical accounting research to identify emerging revenue recognition challenges
  • Have hands‑on experience with revenue recognition tools (e.g., Workday Financial Management, Zuora RevPro)
  • Have SQL proficiency for querying and analyzing large revenue and contract datasets
  • Have proven ability to lead cross‑functional workstreams across Deal Desk, Product, and Partnership teams and drive results
  • Have a demonstrated ability to thrive in fast‑paced, ambiguous environments
Preferred qualifications
  • Have 14+ years of progressive accounting experience, with extensive expertise in ASC 606 implementation and complex revenue recognition scenarios, including 4+ years in a technical revenue leadership or managerial role
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required with demonstrated technical accounting expertise
  • Big 4 technical accounting / national office background combined with industry experience
  • Experience with technical accounting advisory work, including revenue recognition consulting or implementation experience
  • Experience with cloud marketplace, reseller, or channel partnership revenue arrangements
  • Experience working with consumption‑based and subscription‑based revenue models
  • Knowledge of AI/ML, SaaS and technology sector revenue recognition complexities

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT‑3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
