Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Bridge planning & design with facilities operations, regulatory compliance, and sustainability.
  • Oversee FCA management and resiliency planning for Health System and SOM.
  • Lead engineering investigations and design oversight for FCA-driven projects.
  • Coordinate with facilities divisions for lessons learned and continuous improvements.

Job Summary

The Director, Technical Design provides strategic leadership and oversight for Facility Condition Assessments (FCA), technical design standards, resiliency planning, sustainability initiatives, and design quality across Johns Hopkins Health System and the School of Medicine. The Director leads the development and governance of building and infrastructure design standards, ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements, and directs technical design quality for capital projects. In partnership with Planning & Design and Engineering Operations leadership, the Director advances enterprise sustainability and resiliency strategies and collaborates across planning, design, engineering, operations, and project delivery teams to support organizational goals.


Essential Functions


  1. Manage and maintain the facility conditions assessments, resiliency plans, specifications, sustainability plan and provide leadership on-going projects as required.

  2. Acts as a bridge between facilities planning + design, facilities operations, capital projects, regulatory compliance and sustainable initiatives.

  3. Oversees the management of facilities conditions assessments and resiliency planning for the Health System and SOM.

  4. Leads the management of the specifications (hospital, outpatient, and research).

  5. Leads engineering investigations and design oversight for projects that result from the FCA, along with other building envelop repairs.

  6. Coordinates with all divisions of facilities for lessons learned and continuous improvements for design and specifications.

  7. Prepare executive level reports and presentations to communicate strategic infrastructure status.

  8. Supports Engineering Operations for troubling shooting issues.


Education, Experience & Knowledge


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture (Required)

  • Master's Degree (Preferred)

  • Minimum of 7 Years of Experience (Required) including

  • 3 Years of Experience in a Management Capacity Role (Required)

  • ENG - Professional Engineer (Preferred)

  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of medical facility design, including knowledge of acute care, ambulatory, and medical research laboratory building requirements.

  • Strong technical expertise in site and exterior building design.

  • A high level of analytical ability is necessary to resolve complex technical building technical design problems, analyze project request and manage a design team to direct work in a large and complex organization.

  • Lead the adoption on integration of industry best practices, technology innovations, and regulatory requirements.

  • Knowledge of general building and healthcare related safety and regulatory requirements, especially – NFPA Life Safety Code, Building Codes, The Joint Commission, and the Facility Guidelines Institute.

  • Highly proficient in computer applications including Windows, departmental e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and Bluebeam.


Salary Range: Minimum $/visit - Maximum $/visit. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
