Job summary

Apex Clean Energy seeks a Director, Technical Assurance to lead the company’s renewable energy technical advisory function across financing, procurement, and quality governance. You will oversee technical reviews for solar, wind, and storage assets and be the primary technical voice with lenders and investors.

This role requires high‑level collaboration with engineering, development, and legal teams. You will manage a team of technical assurance staff and external consultants, setting standards

Job Description

Apex is hiring a Director, Technical Assurance to own the company's renewable energy technical advisory function across financing, procurement, and quality governance. In this role, you will support technical advisory reviews throughout the asset lifecycle for our utility‑scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will be Apex's senior technical voice with lenders, tax‑equity investors, buyers, OEMs, and third‑party consultants.

Primary Responsibilities

• The senior technical voice across financing, procurement, and construction workstreams within the Apex portfolio. This will also include support wherever Apex needs authoritative technical judgment with external counterparties.

Technical Due Diligence & Financing Support (primary Focus)

• Own the IE and technical due diligence program across debt and tax‑equity financings and capital‑recycling transactions, managing concurrent deals through financial close and COD.
• Serve as the senior Apex technical contact with lenders, tax‑equity investors, buyers, and their third‑party IEs, fielding inquiries directly during financing and due diligence processes.
• Review and validate IE reports, OEM specs/test reports, and technical drawings against financing conditions and CPs.

Broader Technical Advisory (beyond IE)

• Serve as a technical resource to Procurement on OEM equipment contracts, specifications, and vendor disputes touching financing, warranty, or performance risk.
• Support EC/DC qualification and PWA reporting reviews upstream in development.
• Act as a technical escalation point on other cross‑functional issues (e.g., transmission, preconstruction).

Program Leadership

• Lead and develop a team supporting technical assurance and broader procurement efforts — technical assurance staff and external consultants.
• Set diligence and advisory strategy and standards, and hold the team and consultants accountable to them.
• Direct technical data‑room build and quality review.
• Escalate and resolve high‑stakes technical issues, protecting valuations and schedule.
• Partner across engineering, development, transmission, finance, asset management, and legal.
• Build team capability and standardize repeatable processes.

Work Environment

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment, with regular travel to construction sites, operating projects, factories, and counterparty offices. Site visits require adherence to applicable site safety requirements and use of personal protective equipment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, or a related discipline) or equivalent experience is required; an advanced technical degree or an MBA would be an added advantage
• 10+ years of experience in the renewable‑energy industry, spanning project finance, development operations, and engineering, including hands‑on time in independent engineering, owner’s engineering, or technical advisory roles.
• A proven track record of taking technical due diligence through to financial close on debt and tax‑equity financings — owner-side or as the independent engineer — as well as supporting capital‑recycling transactions, including managing discussions with lenders, tax‑equity investors, and buyers.
• Hands‑on experience in identifying and resolving significant technical issues that impact valuation and in closing technical conditions precedent across engineering, finance, and legal domains.
• Familiarity with technical documentation required for tax‑credit qualification (including energy‑community and domestic‑content adders, PWA reporting) and the judgment to push back on third‑party reviews.
• At least 3 years of experience in a senior leadership position, managing technical staff and external consultants while shaping diligence strategy across concurrent deals.
• Strong grasp of technical design and performance across wind, solar, and storage, plus the ability to review design packages and independent energy assessments.
• Able to negotiate findings with third‑party reviewers and lenders' engineers under transaction deadlines.
• Proven ability to direct teams and establish repeatable processes and templates.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an executive presence and the ability to organize and manage multiple concurrent transactions.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).
• Travel Requirements - 20-25%
• Willingness to work onsite in Charlottesville, VA, with travel to project sites, factories, and counterparties as necessary.
